McDonald’s Goes After Starbucks With Pumpkin Lattes and 2 Other Dow Movers to Watch

Is this the first shot of the latte war? McDonald’s is adding pumpkin-spice lattes to its repertoire with which to hopefully entice Starbucks devotees and also to boost traffic. The biggest restaurant chain has been debuting pricier fare like chicken wings, McWraps, and steak breakfast sandwiches to maintain its profitability in a period of higher labor, occupancy, and operating costs. Meanwhile, the fast food behemoth is expanding its value menu to bring in bargain-hunting customers.

The McCafe pumpkin latte is a mix of espresso, milk, and flavored syrup, appears in three sizes, and may be had with whole or non-fat milk. A 16-ounce latte with whole milk contains 340 calories and goes for $2.89.

Alcoa Inc. (NYSE:AA): Current price $8.33

Alcoa has been awarded Metal Bulletin’s top innovation prize for its breakthrough tech that permits the production of more aluminum-intensive vehicles. Alcoa’s invention, which is an aluminum bonding technology, won “Best Product Innovation” of 2013 at the publication’s Global Awards for Aluminium Excellence in Geneva. Alcoa’s tech, Alcoa 951, is an aluminum pretreatment process that provides enhanced adhesive bonding durability and overcomes prior challenges with joining aluminum to itself or other materials. It is now the auto industry standard for aluminum sheet, extrusion, and casting suppliers.

The Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:KO): Current price $38.82

Coca-Cola, DEKA R&D, IBM, Inter-American Development Bank Group, McCann Health, NRG Energy, Inc., Qualcomm  Technologies, Inc., and UPS all announced Tuesday they will work jointly to bring EKOCENTER, a kiosk created to enhance the well-being of communities to 20 countries by the end of 2015. Coca-Cola reported its intent, with the aid of collaborating  organizations, to deliver EKOCENTER to 150 communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting.
